Care on epoxy garage floor

Is it Worth it to Install Epoxy Flooring in my Garage?

May 23, 2022

The garage is usually the first room you see when you get home and the last you see when you leave – having it clean and tidy does wonders for stress, but we all know with lovely Colorado weather that this is no easy feat.

Epoxy is a great solution to keeping your garage in a satisfying state, but there is a lot to know before pulling the trigger on this home improvement investment. Read on to learn whether it is worth it to install epoxy flooring in your own garage.

What is Epoxy Flooring?

Epoxy flooring, also known as resinous flooring, is a highly useful flooring option consisting of a two-part mixture of polymer resins and hardeners. When mixed properly, the two compounds create a chemical bond with one another and bond with the floor itself. The result is a stiff plastic material that is extremely durable and can be spread to cover the entire surface in question.

The Needs of a Garage

The garage is usually one of the primary high-traffic locations of a home. Being the barrier and threshold to the outdoors, one can expect a fair amount of mud and snow to be carried into the garage, especially in the winter and the spring. It is also at the mercy of the constant inflow and outflow of vehicles with constant exposure to hot tires and a torrent of car fluids including oil, gas, antifreeze, and coolant.

This room is a magnet for grime and dirt and thus has the highest demand for caretaking solutions.

Pros of Epoxy Flooring

There are many advantages to epoxy as a flooring solution for your garage including:

Durability: Epoxy is incredibly durable and made to last for a long time. Epoxy is non-porous, so it is highly resistant to stains and easy to clean. This type of flooring also holds up against high usage, chipping, and damage. You can expect your garage to still look great for years after the epoxy application.

Property Value: The value of your home will increase with all improvements. Epoxy floors especially add to the aesthetics of a home – new homebuyers will be intrigued by a clean, shiny garage floor.

Protection: Epoxy flooring acts as a layer of protection for the underlying concrete. Beyond its easy cleaning benefits, you won’t have to worry about chipping or cracking your floor if you accidentally drop your bike or a hammer. Epoxy flooring can also help to keep your garage pest free.

Cons of Epoxy Flooring

There are some downsides to epoxy flooring in the garage not making it perfect for every homeowner including:

Longevity: It is important to understand that epoxy flooring is not a permanent solution and has a lifetime of about 10-20 years.

Slippery: Epoxy flooring can be slippery when wet. Special mixtures and textures can be applied to overcome this issue.

Not resistant to everything: Epoxy flooring is not resistant to all things, but is particularly true of high heat. If you plan to weld in your garage, for example, hot slag can fall onto the floor and leave scorch marks. Hot tires can also cause delamination of the epoxy if your solution is not rated for high temperatures.

Cost of Epoxy Flooring

The cost you might incur for installing epoxy flooring in your garage varies due to a few factors. Square footage of the garage, type of epoxy, base concrete preparation, special design features (i.e. texture or color), number of epoxy coats, and the contractor used will all impact the price.

An average cost is around $1,100 to $3,500 to cover your garage floor in epoxy. Some of the expenses can be negated by preparing your garage floor yourself – take a look at our blog on prepping garage floors for epoxy to learn more.

Alternatives to Epoxy Flooring

There are some alternatives to epoxy flooring, but none of them do quite as good a job. There is porcelain tile, concrete paint, and interlocking plastic or rubber tiles to name a few. Each of these may look good aesthetically but they are not nearly as durable, non-porous, or as long-lasting as epoxy.

Is Epoxy Worth it?

With any home improvement upgrade, there will be upfront costs associated, but this should not be a deterrent. The amount you pay is well worth the cost due to the superior performance, protection, and appearance of your new garage floor – this is all in addition to the increased home value which will recover some of that cost should you end up selling your home.
