Concrete vs Epoxy Flooring: Finding the Best Commercial Flooring Option for Your Business

December 14, 2018

Do you own or manage a restaurant, car dealership, lab, or even a hospital in Northern Colorado? If so, you know that a durable floor is absolutely essential to the functionality of your business.

When it comes to durable and long-lasting flooring options, concrete flooring and epoxy flooring are probably what come to mind. Here we break down the pros and cons of each commercial flooring option so you can discover what will suit your industry best!

Durable Flooring

When thinking of durability, concrete most frequently comes to mind as being the most durable flooring option. Most concrete floors have a standard rating of 3500-4000 psi ( pound-force per square inch ). This is frequently used in garage floors or a higher rating of concrete used for foundation slabs.

When it comes to durability, concrete is hard to beat, but surprisingly, an epoxy floor can match the same rating as concrete in durability.

Our floors at Epoxy Colorado are carefully made to match the same 4000 psi of concrete, epoxy floors can even exceed this rating because the layers of polymer adhere to an already strong and sturdy slab of concrete. While both options are great for durability, epoxy flooring can still match that of a concrete floor.

Waterproof and Stain Resistant Flooring

This is where concrete takes a backseat to epoxy floors. Everyone has seen an oil-stained concrete floor or a driveway that is crumbling. These may be acceptable features in your 15-year-old garage, but these are unacceptable in a hospital surgical room, your car dealership showroom, or your cooking kitchen when the health inspectors come for a site visit.

In regards to moisture, concrete in itself is moisture resistant, but the stamping together of different slabs allows for moisture to seep in between the joints and erode the material. Impermeability to chemicals also greatly depends on the quality and construction of the concrete. For more info on factors affecting concrete, visit here.

Epoxy flooring is by far the more stain-resistant flooring option due to its chemical makeup and installation process. The installation process of an epoxy floor doesn’t allow for these cracks or connection points to occur, making it more resistant to water and moisture over the long haul.

Hospital and Lab Flooring

Hospitals and labs need additional requirements of exceptional hygienic qualities and chemical-resistant flooring for their industry, as well as an aesthetically pleasing look.

Chemistry labs and hospitals use epoxy flooring coatings frequently because it is easy to clean, resistant to moisture, and not eroded by strong chemicals due to their specific chemical structure. Concrete is very durable, but is not as aesthetically pleasing and is more susceptible to chemical erosion and moisture. While this is changing, due to advances in sealed concrete.

So far, epoxy flooring is the most reliable for such high-traffic, specialized areas.

Here at Epoxy Colorado, we are so confident in our epoxy flooring and the quality of our installation that we offer a 15-year warranty on most commercial installations!
